The new secured entrance to Edina High School funnels visitors into the office during the school day. Students and visitors enter to an abundance of natural light and amphitheater-style seating.
From soft furniture to high-top stools to small group meeting rooms, learning commons throughout the school provide flexible options for students and teachers outside of classrooms for individual learning, collaboration or project work. The individual learning commons are also named after current and former Edina schools.
The remodeled media commons features a library with areas for quiet reading, studying or collaboration. Outside of the library is a common space for group work, a writing workshop, technology help and the entrance to the new student support services office, which includes school counselors, social workers and psychologist, creating a single location where students can access any academic, social or emotional service they need.
The Edina Activity Center (EAC) is a 70,000 square foot addition at EHS that includes a three-court gymnasium, auxiliary gym, three-lane walking track, fitness center, locker rooms and lobby area that doubles as a large group project space during the school day. The EAC also encompasses robotics labs and large learning spaces for Project Lead The Way classes and other technology education courses.
During the school week, the EAC enables a wider variety of fitness opportunities designed to meet district educational competencies and academic standards. According to Troy Stein, assistant principal and activities director, the philosophy of physical education classes has evolved to emphasize overall fitness and foster an interest in a healthy lifestyle, thus signage at the entrance to the new space reads “Wellness Center.”
