The renovations at Broomfield Heights Middle School began as an upgrade to infrastructure systems across the facility, including new mechanical systems to provide air conditioning while reducing energy use. Due to the tight budget reserved for infrastructure, Boulder Valley School District needed to be deliberate about upgrades in order to leverage BEST funds to create collaborative and innovative spaces usable by the entire school. Gutting the old, underutilized library, the reimagined innovation space serves as the core of the middle school and acts as a resource for students with multiple flexible-use learning spaces. The reclaimed innovation space and additional learning environments fit into the pre-existing flexible learning plan for the District by supporting independent, small-group, large-group, and project-based learning.
