Following a Needs Assessment Study performed by Wold in 2017, the City of Crystal determined the best strategy to replace their aging and inadequate police facility was to demolish the existing facility and build an expanded new police facility on the site adjacent to the existing City Hall.
The design solution created an optimal facility to encourage interaction among the entire department. While Crystal’s existing facility was spread out across two floors and tucked divisions into separate pockets throughout the mid-century modern building, the new facility placed all occupied space on the main level. A lower level contains locker rooms, a training room, and a fitness room available for all city employees and indoor parking for the entire fleet. The administrative, patrol, investigations and command staff are all adjacent in open, bright spaces that will encourage better camaraderie on the department and offer frequent changes to interact.
In addition to operational efficiency, the facility was designed to comply with the State of Minnesota’s B3 Sustainability Guidelines for efficient buildings.
