In November 2016, Englewood Schools passed a bond for $96 million to replace four existing elementary schools and an early childhood learning center. School communities defined by their respective neighborhoods became leaders in the discussion and excitement surrounding the design of their updated 21st-century elementary schools.
Clayton Elementary and Charles Hay Elementary School are two replacement schools serving kindergarten through sixth-grade students, where the designs express their function. At Charles Hay, an International Baccalaureate school, the building has a one-story gym, cafeteria and shared spaces as well as two-story classroom wings oriented east-west for maximum natural daylighting. At Clayton Elementary, two multi-story classroom wings anchor the north-south spine of the school. Both schools separate bus and parent drop-off areas to reduce vehicle congestion, minimize their footprints to maximize play areas, feature secure educational courtyards, and share an international style of architecture.
