Wold provided architectural and engineering services for the new Marc L. Burnett Student Recreation & Fitness Center at Tennessee Tech University. The building’s design is a contemporary interpretation of the Georgian Style of Architecture that is prevalent on the campus. Through the choice of materials and Georgian architectural elements, the building complements other structures on the campus.
This private, commanding three-story facility contains the main multi-court divisible gym, racquetball courts, a multi-purpose fitness center with a climbing wall, an indoor recreational pool, lockers, classrooms, training rooms, a gym, dance studio, a golf simulator, a wellness and nutrition area, offices and large group exercise areas. An elevated walking track flows throughout the facility with inclines and opportunities to see other activities occurring in different areas of the recreation center. The outdoor features include basketball and pickleball courts. Another feature of this facility is the outdoor pursuits component which provides students the opportunity to rent outdoor equipment such as kayaks to take advantage of the natural outdoor wonders that abound in this area.
At the intersection of Willow Avenue and 7th Street, the Burnett Fitness Center provides a new gateway to the campus. Administration and students believe it will be a major recruitment attraction for future students.
