Keeping the forecasted community’s needs in focus, the new police headquarters for the Village of North Aurora is more than the traditional police station. A group of stakeholders, including the police department and village staff, developed design criteria that accomplished ambitious multi-use building goals. A community and training room can function as an emergency operations center (EOC) for the Village. A flexible-position firing range provides floor space for tactical training exercises. A drive-through sally port can accommodate ambulances and additional public safety vehicles.
In addition to these flexible spaces, the police headquarters includes six holding cells, a juvenile holding area, and evidence processing labs. All materials and finishes are appropriate to their context throughout the facility. Meanwhile, the exterior reflects the durability, functionality, and maintainability of a public facility, as well as elements of the community’s historical architecture along the Fox River.
