Wold provided planning, engineering, and architectural services to the City of Hendersonville for the master plan of Volunteer Park, which spans over 45 acres. Phase I of the project consisted of two soccer fields with irrigation, a parking lot, and a perimeter walking trail completed in February 2016. Wold worked with former Parks Director Brandon Rogers to develop the design for Volunteer Park at Arrowhead to alleviate current traffic congestion and overcrowding at Drakes Creek Park and meet the demands of the growing City. “The growth is there. All of our youth sports have grown beyond our expectations in the past two years,” said Rogers in an article appearing in The Tennessean.
For Phase II, Wold assisted the city and community development partners in the preparation of a local parks and recreation fund (LPRF) grant application to the State of Tennessee for the development of the second phase of Volunteer Park at Arrowhead. This phase included a building with concessions and restrooms along with an asphalt walking trail. Wold prepared a preliminary floor plan and site plan along with an estimate of probable construction costs for the grant application. Upon awarding the grant to the City of Hendersonville, Wold worked with Andy Gilley, current Parks Director, and Parks staff to design the proposed building and site improvements. Construction documents for the approved concessions and restroom building, as well as a trail and pedestrian bridge, were completed by Wold and submitted to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) for their approval prior to bidding the project. The building is approximately 1,400 square feet and in addition to the concessions and restrooms, there is a covered patio. The 10’ wide asphalt trail is approximately 400 LF and connects a picnic area to the building site via a 30 linear foot (LF) pre-engineered steel bridge that crosses a creek.
All work in Phase II was completed in late 2019. The funding approvals were finalized, and the State closed out the project with the City in early 2020. Volunteer Park at Arrowhead soccer complex and amenities were opened and fully operational for the calendar year 2020.
